The Magic of Stuðlagil Canyon – And How to See It at Its Best

It’s hard to believe now, but just a few years ago, almost no one was talking about Stuðlagil Canyon. I lived in the valley from 2014 to 2016, and while I had visited the area, I didn’t fully grasp how unique it was. Back then, it wasn’t as accessible—and it definitely wasn’t on the radar of most travelers.
But everything changed when images of the canyon’s towering basalt columns and turquoise river started spreading. Today, Stuðlagil is one of East Iceland’s most photographed natural wonders—and for good reason. But even now, it has a quiet kind of magic, especially if you know when to go and how to experience it right.
Why Stuðlagil Canyon Is So Special
Stuðlagil is one of the best examples of basalt column formations in all of Iceland. The canyon was hidden for centuries beneath the powerful Jökla river, but after the Kárahnjúkar hydropower plant redirected much of the flow in 2009, the canyon gradually revealed itself.
The contrast is what makes it unforgettable: sheer walls of dark, geometric rock cut through by glowing blue water in summer—or earthy, dramatic tones in fall and spring. No two visits feel the same.
My Favorite Time to Visit
Personally, I love autumn. The colors of the surrounding hills shift to deep reds and golds, and the river turns browner, giving the canyon a richer, moodier contrast. It feels more raw—like nature preparing for winter.
That said, summer is absolutely mesmerizing. On the right day, the river glows an almost surreal shade of blue. With long daylight hours and accessible trails, it’s the most popular time to visit for good reason.
East Side vs. West Side: Which One Should You Choose?
This is one of the most common questions we hear from travelers. Here’s the truth:
East Side (Hiking Route): This is where we guide 95% of our summer tours. You can walk right up to the basalt walls, explore more of the canyon, and—if conditions allow—even climb down to the water. It’s more physically demanding, but it offers the richest experience.
West Side (Viewpoint): More accessible by car, this side gives you a wide view of the canyon from above. There’s no long hike, so it’s ideal for those short on time or visiting in winter. In snowy months, this is the safest way to see the canyon, and it still impresses.
We almost always choose the east side for summer tours, and the west side in winter for safety reasons.
What You Might Miss (If You’re Rushing)
On tours, I often show guests small details around the canyon—places most people walk past without noticing. It could be the shape of the rocks above you, patterns in the cliff face, or smaller trails that lead to quieter spots. What I share depends on the group and the moment. That’s part of the magic: each visit is a little different.

Planning Your Visit: Practical Tips
Dress accordingly – Even in summer, weather can shift quickly. Sturdy shoes, wind protection, and layers are always a good idea.
Don’t underestimate the hike – Especially on the east side. It’s not difficult, but it can be muddy, uneven, or hot depending on the season.
Give yourself time – Don’t just show up for a photo. Sit, breathe, and take in the scale of it all. It’s a canyon worth feeling, not just seeing.
Go with a guide – Whether it’s us or someone else, going with a local opens up more than just directions. You’ll leave with stories, context, and details you might have missed on your own.
