Family exploring the wilderness on a private tour in East Iceland

Djúpivogur is a quiet harbour town in East Iceland and a beautiful starting point for private shore excursions. It is smaller and quieter than many cruise ports, which makes it ideal for travellers looking for a more personal and relaxed experience.

At East Highlanders, we currently offer two selected private tours from Djúpivogur: one focused on dramatic coastal landscapes and photography, and one focused on geothermal relaxation and scenic driving.

So which one should you choose: Vestrahorn or Vök Baths?

Vestrahorn & Stokksnes: for dramatic landscapes and photography

The Private Vestrahorn & Stokksnes Tour from Djúpivogur is the stronger choice if you want big landscapes, black sand dunes, coastal scenery and mountain views.

Vestrahorn is one of Iceland’s most striking mountains. The area around Stokksnes offers wide open views, black sand, dunes, reflections when conditions are right and excellent photography opportunities.

This tour is ideal for:

  • photographers

  • couples

  • small private groups

  • travellers who want a “wow” landscape

  • cruise passengers who want a scenic nature-focused excursion

The tour is easy-paced, with no long hike, but guests should be able to walk short distances on black sand and natural surfaces. Admission to the Stokksnes / Vestrahorn area is included in the tour price.

Vök Baths: for relaxation and an easy-paced day

The Private Vök Baths & Scenic Eastfjords Tour from Djúpivogur is a softer and more relaxed experience.

This 6-hour tour combines a scenic drive from Djúpivogur to the Egilsstaðir area with time at Vök Baths, one of East Iceland’s most unique geothermal bathing experiences. Admission to Vök Baths is included.

After the baths, there is time for lunch in the Egilsstaðir area. Meals and drinks are not included, so guests can choose what suits them best depending on timing, availability and preference.

This tour is ideal for:

  • travellers who want an easy day

  • guests who prefer wellness and relaxation

  • people who do not want a long walk

  • couples and small groups

  • cruise passengers looking for comfort and scenery

The Vök Baths tour is available from 15 June to 15 September.

Which tour is better for you?

Choose Vestrahorn if you want:

  • dramatic mountain scenery

  • black sand dunes

  • coastal landscapes

  • photography

  • a nature-focused shore excursion

Choose Vök Baths if you want:

  • geothermal bathing

  • a relaxed pace

  • scenic driving

  • time for lunch

  • an easy shore excursion with no long hike

Both tours include private pickup and drop-off in Djúpivogur, local guiding, comfortable transport and bottled water.

What about Jökulsárlón?

Longer private tours from Djúpivogur, including routes toward Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, may be available on request depending on ship schedule, weather, road conditions and guide availability.

However, we do not offer Jökulsárlón as a standard bookable tour from Djúpivogur at this time. We prefer to offer tours that are realistic, comfortable and well suited to the time guests have in port.
